When we lived together our collections were always stronger, but apart we're both finally able to breathe. Passing ships in the night no longer, big brother.

Mother's Day

"We can invest enormous time and energy in serious efforts to know another person, but in the end, how close are we able to come to that person's essence? We convince our selves that we know the other person well, but do we really know anything important about anyone?"
- The Wind Up Bird Chronicles

Recession

Dear Economy,

Please recover. I know it may take a little while, and realistically a couple of years, but I need me some work. Any work. Really.

Regards,

Laura

Mother's Day

Happy mother's day.

The graveyard was beautiful, it was unseasonably cold and raining which kept the other visitors at bay. I shot off an entire roll of film while Douglas talked about what life might be like if she hadn't died, what she would think of us now eighteen years later.

He thinks she'd probably wish I was a nurse or something.

Surface Tension

The show is all set up with the gallery open tomorrow. It looks like a room full of attractive people that you just kind of want to work your hardest to get to like you. The work just pops.

Vernissage on Thursday night! Hope to see you there!

The Burden of What Remains

The Jacket

I posted a section of my digital class series on flickr and thought I'd share with the internet that knows my name. My artist statement is on the flickr page which you can click through to see but I thought I'd share the quote I read in class when I presented the final group of images, an act that made at least one person cry. I remembered the quote about half-way through creating the series and let the idea behind it find the rest of the images.

When someone you love dies, and you're not expecting it, you don't lose her all at once; you lose her in pieces over a long time - the way the mail stops coming, and her scent fades from the pillows and even from the clothes in her closet and drawers. Gradually, you accumulate the parts of her that are gone. Just when the day comes - when there's a particular missing part that overwhelms you with the feeling that she's gone, forever - there comes another day, and another specifically missing part.
